SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE

Record as Governor

In March of 2009 Governor Huntsman signed into law three bills HB 90, HB 222, and HB 114 essentially restricting abortions. HB 90 makes the penalty for having an illegal late-term abortion a second-degree felony and makes second-term abortions illegal. HB 222 requires that women be given information on the pain that an abortion will cause the fetus and also be offered anesthesia to the baby before the abortion. HB 114 created a legal defense fund to which private citizens could donate in order to assist the abortion ban which is thought to be approved by 2014.

As governor he commended President Obama’s choice of abortion advocate Kathleen Sebelius to head Health and human Services.  “The selection of Kathleen for this critical post is a welcome announcement from the Obama administration.  Kathleen brings a fundamental wealth of knowledge and experience that will be indispensable in leading the reform efforts that are so critical to our nation going forward.” http://www.utah.gov/governor/news_media/article.html?article=2364

While running for governor in 2004 he voiced his support for human embryonic stem cell experimentation.  Ambassador Huntsman’s father is the founder and chief financial backer of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, a research organization which has consistently advocated in favor of federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. http://www.verumserum.com/?p=25844

Record as Chinese Ambassador

After taking a position in the strongly pro-abortion Obama Administration as Ambassador to China there is no record Ambassador Huntsman spoke out against China’s oppressive abortion policies including forced sterilization and coercive abortion.  Huntsman acceptance of the position caused John Bolton, former U.N. Ambassador for to the UN under President George W. Bush (and potential rival for the Republican Presidential nod), to comment:

What about Jon Huntsman? The former Utah governor recently served as ambassador to China. If Bolton is not on that stage, maybe he could be an effective foreign-policy foil. Bolton scowls at the thought. “I continue to believe in the Eleventh Commandment,” he says, referring to Ronald Reagan’s maxim not to criticize fellow Republicans. “But I will say this, unequivocally: I would not work in Barack Obama’s administration.”

Bolton wonders why Huntsman, if he is a conservative, decided to accept the president’s appointment. “There is no patriotic obligation to help advance the career of a politician who is otherwise pursuing interests that are fundamentally antithetical to your values. That’s not the call of patriotism,” he says. “I don’t understand it. This is not like World War II, when we are facing an existential threat to the country as a whole, and you do put partisanship aside.”

MARRIAGE AND HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA

Civil Unions

In 2009, while serving as the Governor of Utah, Jon Huntsman spoke in favor of Civil Unions even though a recorded 70% of the citizens at that time oppose.

In an interview in New Hampshire with CNN’s John King, Ambassador Huntsman said that he is, “For traditional marriage” but thinks that we don’t do enough for equality in this country which is why he supports civil unions.

Dividing Conservatives

Homosexual groups that work to divide Republicans on all social issues, GOProud and Log Cabin Republicans, both have supported Ambassador Huntsman presidential campaign.

Ambassador huntsman campaign is actively highlighting his support for the homosexual agenda, using it to fundraise off of.  http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0611/57403.html

Ambassador Huntsman’s liberal stance on some social issues, combined with his embrace of the Obama Administration, has contributed to his low poll numbers among Republicans and is believed to be a large part of why he is avoiding the Iowa caucuses which tend to put more of a focus on social issues (he also cites his refusal is his opposition to ethanol subsidies).  How this will play in other states where primary voters place importance on social issues remains to be seen.  A similar division strategy by the liberal former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani failed.

FISCAL ISSUES

Big Spender

In a 2008 evaluation of state governors’ fiscal policies, the libertarian Cato Institute gave Governor Huntsman a B, praising his tax policies and efforts to cut taxes.  The report specifically highlighted his reductions of the sales tax and simplification of the tax code. However, the report concluded that: “Unfortunately, Huntsman has completely dropped the ball on spending, with per capita spending increasing at about 10 percent annually during his tenure.” http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa-624.pdf

Mandate Supporter

As Governor, Jon Huntsman supported an individual mandate, a central part of the oppressive health care law known as Obamacare, when it comes to health care coverage.  Despite ample public proof of his support he and his campaign denied he ever supported such a mandate.

Stimulus “Too Small”

Ambassador Huntsman believes the problem with President Obama’s $787 “stimulus” bill was it was too small

“I guess in hindsight we can all say that there were some fundamental flaws with it,” Huntsman told Politico in 2009. “It probably wasn’t large enough and, number two, there probably wasn’t enough stimulus effect. For example, a payroll tax exemption or maybe even a cut in the corporate tax…for small and medium-sized businesses for three years, for example.”

Global Warming

As Governor, Huntsman signed Utah onto the Western Climate Initiative, which will eventually include a carbon emissions cap and trade program. The cap and trade system would stifle business growth and ultimately the economy. In an article in the Deseret News, Huntsman said that, “We are leading the charge. We are not waiting for Washington any longer,” regarding environmental protection. In addition to the Western Climate initiative Huntsman signed a number of environmental protection laws including HB93 and HB 96 which increased emission inspection standards.  He also appeared to favor intervention on the federal level.  “We in the West are already wrestling with the critical issue of greenhouse-gas emissions,” his statement says. “This ad is an effort to encourage congressional action, which is imperative to a nationwide, comprehensive approach to clean our air and create new economic-development opportunities for our state and nation.”  Huntsman told the New York Times that action on the national level was preferable to the patchwork system that state governments have been putting in place.

It appears that he has not completely abandoned the idea of cap and trade.  “Much of this discussion happened before the bottom fell out of the economy, and until it comes back, this isn’t the moment,” he says now.

When asked whether he believes the climate is changing, he acknowledges the scientific consensus. “All I know is 90 percent of the scientists say climate change is occurring,” he says. “If 90 percent of the oncological community said something was causing cancer, we’d listen to them.”
